Our multi-award-winning organisation is seeking a Sous Chef to join the Hospitality team at Vi and John Rubens House Nursing Home in Ilford (IG2 6JH), with the exciting opportunity to move to our brand-new Sugar and Ronson Campus and the new Sugar Family Care Home (IG4 5LN) in early summer 2026.

If you are not familiar with Kosher kitchen practices … don’t worry – full training is provided.

You will be working 5 out of 7 days including weekends (averaging 1 weekend in 3) with Occasional evening shifts for special events (averaging 1 a month). This post is working 40 hours a week on a shift basis.The shifts are:

  • 7am to 15.30 pm ( 8 hours with a 30 minute break)
  • 8am to 16.30pm ( 8 hours with a 30 minute break)
  • 10am to 18.30pm ( 8 hours with a 30 minute break)

What you will be doing

  • You will have a key role ensuring we deliver an excellent service to our customers, creating an inviting and pleasant environment. Your core duties will involve:
  • Ensuring all food produced is to the agreed standard, developing innovative approaches ensuring market trends, cultural requirements and Kashrut laws are met
  • Ensuring all food hygiene and Health & Safety practices are monitored, met, and recorded in line with organisational policies and current legislations
  • Working within the agreed budget, administer unit controls in line with budget and consistently seek and implement ways of improving the quality and cost effectiveness of the service
  • Leading, motivating and encouraging team building to ensure agreed qualitative outcomes are achieved and customer service expectations are exceeded and maintained
  • Deputising for the Chef in their absence and comply with their responsibilities

Who are we looking for?

You will ideally have previous experience working within a busy kitchen environment, working both independently and within a team. You will need:

  • Appropriate supervisory experience and relevant qualifications pertaining to the safe delivery of Food & Hygiene or Catering Services. NVQ Level 2 or 3
  • Energetic, passionate and proactive attitude
  • Experience of working to deadlines and adhering to budgetary requirements.
  • Understands the challenge of and sensitivity needed to care and support vulnerable people

Jewish Care has now received planning permission to develop a brand new, first-class campus in Redbridge for the East London and Essex Jewish community, following approval of our planning application. The new development will be on the site of the current Redbridge Jewish Community Centre (RJCC), formerly known as Sinclair House.

The site in Redbridge will comprise a beautiful, first-rate, purpose-built 66-bed care home, which our Vi & John Rubens House in Gants Hill will relocate to, a wonderful, first-class, modern, and fully accessible community centre space and a centre for people living with dementia.
